Kerry Walker: New Zealand Landscape Artist ~ An introductionBorn 1964 in Nelson, Kerry displayed an artistic talent for recording his world from as early as 6 years old.
At aged 13 Kerry became a member of the Nelson Independent Art Society and at 18 began regularly exhibiting and selling his art through Nelson's Rutherford Art Gallery. Kerry left school at 15 and worked on the family pig farm. The family then spent nine years dairy farming. Kerry used these surroundings to develop his talents. With the easel set up in the family farmhouse, visitors came calling and commissions were undertaken. In his late twenties, Kerry ventured into property development and later became a builder and always painted in his spare time in oils and watercolours. These days Kerry is a professional artist.
Currently working from his home overlooking Tasman Bay, Kerry spends his weeks painting, tramping and sailing, providing inspiration for his beautiful landscapes. Kerry's camera goes everywhere with him, he can take rolls of film of a scene when inspiration hits. Kerry is drawn to capture not only the scene before him but also to take home the mood, to later develop an original composition of perspective and perception with that unique quality that can only be described as 'being there'. In fact when standing before Kerry's impressive 2-metre oil painting on canvas 'Port Hardy, d'Urville Island' it's almost possible to hear the water lapping on the shore or feel the stones under your feet. Each piece is a development of sun, shade, sensitivity of spirit, evocation and thirst for detail that the camera can't possibly capture reflecting love of colour, light, and the intricate details. Months can be devoted to works translating into that excitement and incessant delight for the artistic process that ultimately brings his work to life and sets it apart from others. Those artists whose personality and talent allow them to capture not only a scene but also a genuine sense of place, mood and moment are most certainly a rare delight - and there is no doubt that Kerry Walker is one of them. |
